Hanover Street is the North End of Boston’s main drag. It features a slew of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, shops, and more. It’s as scenic as it is peaceful to walk through despite being busy with people. When people think of the North End, they think of Hanover Street. Understanding the history of one of the oldest roads in the entire city is an honor for us, and we’d like to share it with you.
Time Machine Back To The Past
Hanover Street started as an Indian path for easy access to the harbor. It was then called Orange Tree Lane before being renamed after the House Of Hanover in England. It started to nestle a community and eventually turned into Little Italy once Italian Immigrants arrived in Boston, Massachusetts, in the early 1900s. By 1905, there were 27,000 Italian American’s living in Boston, the North End, and especially Hanover Street combined for 22,000 of those people. It truly is where the inception of Italian culture in Boston began, and it continues to flourish to this day.
Restaurants On Hanover Street
When Boston started to grow, and shops began to open, plenty of Italian Immigrants took it upon themselves to showcase their culinary skills and bring their unique and diverse background into the world of food for American Citizens. This was when restaurants and bakeries on Hanover street began to sprout. There are now dozens of restaurants of incredible Italian restaurants all over Hanover Street.
Trattoria Il Panino On Hanover Street
We started as a small sandwich shop famous for our Panino, a sandwich with Parma Prosciutto, Bufala Mozzarella, tomatoes, and fresh basil. This was when it was transformed into a Trattoria and the restaurant that still stands to this day. Our Trattoria has been voted “Best of Boston” in the past and is an authentic taste of the Amalfi Coast in Italy. We started with a man named Frank Depasquale, who had a fiery passion for serving people pieces of his past, the food that he craved and knew well. This has led us to where we are today.
